Today some random guy walking behind me out of the engineering building yelled the above quote and it made me smile.
Anyway, my goal with this post is for it to NOT be a picture dump as my previous posts have been. However, this post will have lots of pictures. Does this make sense? I don’t know. Probably not. To start things off, the Picture of the Day from yesterday!
Feb 14: On Valentine’s Day I went out con la madre to shop for a birthday present. We passed by an empty store and saw this poster behind one of the windows. I’m not sure what this place is supposed to be. Massage? Acupuncture? Regardless, I’ve always found it fascinating that different pressure points can affect different parts of the body!
Also on Valentine’s Day I finally bought something that’s been on my shopping list for ages: a capo for my acoustic guitar! In layman terms, it’s a clamp that you put on the neck of your guitar to change the pitch. Before, when I wanted to learn a song that required a capo, I’d give up and choose another song. Recently I took a different route and fashioned myself a makeshift capo with two rubber bands and a pencil, which did the trick. However, it was a pain in the booty to put it on and take it off when I wanted to play a different song. Fed up with this nonsense, I finally went to the music store and bought the real thing. Oh, it’s the most amazing thing ever.
I should also mention that, after 5 years, I’ve finally given a name to my acoustic guitar: Austin. So now the family’s complete!
Jackie’s Instrument Family:
- Cherry: a dark red Fender P-Bass
- Baby Doll: a metallic baby blue Fender Strat
- Nighthawk: a black Peavey “Strat” wannabe (named it when I was in 7th grade and, unfortunately, the name stuck)
- Austin: a sunburst Squire acoustic guitar
Clearly, I enjoy naming things that are special to me! Some other items I’ve named are:
- Milton: my stuffed moose
- Horton: my little purple stuffed elephant
- Tabasco: my red piggy bank
- Winston: my wooden art mannequin
- George: my car, a Chevy Impala
- Utsu, the Destroyer: my samurai sword
I’ve also had house plants named Marcus and Christopher and a red daisy named Yossarian.
Do you guys have names for any special items in your life? :]
Finally, it’s the Picture of the Day!
Yeah. Thin Mints. My favorite kind of Girl Scout cookie. Mint and chocolate were made for each other…
…is “Darling Dear” by the Jackson 5. That is one gorgeous bass line.
Anyway, I’ve got back into playing bass again! Last Christmas I was little overwhelmed by the mass of music books given to me, and after watching a documentary about the Funk Brothers, the musicians behind the Motown sound, and listening to bass tracks by James Jamerson, I was very disheartened. How could I ever be that good? For awhile I was frustrated with the instrument and poor Cherry, my bass guitar, got pretty dusty. A couple of days ago, however, I ran by thumb over my calloused fingertips and realized that I missed playing. I got so caught up in the idea of becoming the greatest that I forgot that I should be having fun. So, this afternoon, I picked Cherry up again and now I’m learning “You Keep Me Hanging On” by the Supremes! So why dontcha be a man about it, and set me free…
And now for a very relevant picture! Today, over dinner, my mother remarked that I have a “guitarist’s fingers” which, apparently, means my fingers are long and slender. I took it as a compliment.
I usually don’t post song lyrics as titles or even as Facebook statuses, but I can’t get this song outta my head! I heard it on Last. fm and it’s so darn catchy! It’s called “Doesn’t Everybody Want To Fall in Love” by Kristinia Debarge. I just love the part where she sings: “He’s so good to me, He’s so sweet to me.” I honestly do this weird head shift dance thing at that part…
Ahem! Anyway, I haven’t done much today other than clean my room and get some things together for the big day tomorrow: the first day of my second semester of college, or TFDOMSSOC! (Pronounced as, “Tuh-Fff-Dom-Sock!”) I’m actually surprised by how chill I feel about it. 3 weeks of Winter Break is just waaaayyyy too long and I’ve actually missed the academic life! I just need something to DO! Perhaps in a future post, I’ll talk about my schedule and classes.
Eh. Short post. I’ll make up for it tomorrow! At least I’ll have something good to talk about!
So, without further ado, the “Star of Sunday”…
It’s Milton the Moose! Though, I’m beginning to suspect he’s actually a reindeer. His antler structure is a bit… vertical. Whatever. He’s a moose in my eyes! We met on Christmas Day and have been nearly inseparable ever since!
